Regnier enjoys challenges of

Teaching & Writing

          By Marilyn Prather                                                   ONCE AGAIN

Spring is coming once again                We can feel it down inside                      To this small West Texas Town            That winter is almost Spring                   As we sit around and watch                 The days start getting longer                    The temperatures go up and down.       As our hearts begin to sing

Singing the song of change                  The weather's been like this for years        As Spring comes around the bend       Most of us are used to it                          The days start getting longer                Giving us a good excuse                          As our hearts begin to sing.                 In our easy chairs we sit                          -

The days slowly passing by                                                                .-                Tugs at our very heart strings                                                                                  The melody of new life is heard                                                                                That each new Spring still brings.

By Richard J.D. Regnier

Richard J.D. Regnier, author of the above poem and first year industrial art teacher at Lamesa High School, is a native of Erie, Colorado -- a small coal mining community at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

"Maybe that is where I originally became interested in poetry in an unconscious way because Colorado is a beautiful place to live and reflect on. It's a haven for artists. But it was less than a year ago that I actually started writing and now I have over 400 poems categorized in booklet form," states Richard.  Once Again is his latest work.

A variety of experiences have touched Regnier's life. After graduation from high school in 1946, he went into the air corps and was stationed in Nagoya, Japan after the war. After his discharge he attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado. He married and moved to Newark N.J. where he got his electronics schooling. Later moving to Austin, Texas where he opened his own television repair business.

After eight years he re-enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany with NATO in the microwave communications field, detached into Metz, France. His next assignment was one year in a remote assignment to Sonderstrom Air Force Base in Greenland. His next assignment was as an instructor in the electronics department as a  Microwave/Tropospheric Scatter instructor at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi.

After his discharge he moved back to Austin, Texas and taught in private schools for three years. He then moved to Odessa, Texas where he taught electronics at Odessa High School and Odessa College in the vocational department for eight years.

"At that point I took a sabbatical for one year in California to obtain training in the Montessori method of education, a self-paced program beginning to spread throughout the country." he says.

Richard has taught in Waco at Texas State Technical Institute and other vocations training schools including night courses at Odessa College but he wanted to return to a small town in West Texas. Lamesa was his choice.

Regnier has taught all levels and phases of electronics, pottery, welding, wood and leather crafts. Even though he studied electronics in New Jersey he received his B.S. Degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and his Masters of Education degree at Sul Ross State University at Alpine, Texas in Industrial Arts.

"It was while studying English and prose at San Marcos that my interest in writing was tapped. It was like opening a flood gate he recalls.

Now, hundreds of poems later and with his third space mystery novel in progress, he says he feels he has a gift that some day may bring enjoyment to many people. "If not, it's been a relaxing and rewarding activity that fills many an hour during the weekends and other free time."

Eventually he hopes to visit local poets and take part in writing seminars and workshops. But for now he's looking forward to summer vacation when he can go to Colorado to relax and write. By the time he returns to Lamesa, he may have doubled his repertoire.
